Just a few days ago I watched a 1960's episode of the old British television show called The Avengers, titled, 'The Correct Way to Kill' that brought up some old memories. The English actress who played the part of the Russian woman fit the stereotypes of Russian women at the time to a tee, by our country for sure, and I guess English audiences then (not sure about that). It was a vision of Russian woman looking more like brutish men.
This stereotyping which I believe started in the 1950’s and became famous by the 1980's with the Wendy's commercial of a beefy Russian woman walking the runway in a drab army uniform, I thought would have ended by the 1990's let alone into the 21st century.
In 2008 after watching Russian Pop Music Videos, I figured the stereotype of Russian women was blown away finally. Not quite. I worked at the time with men of ages 60 to 68 and was shocked to learn that they still considered Russian women to be bulky and hairy legged. These men could not believe how I described the women in these videos. The biggest shock was it was held by some younger men as well. No doubt handed down by the old folks who didn’t know any better.
In my country, part of the blame, (putting it mildly), we owe to our media. It is a stereotype I believe they wanted to portray of Russian women. Why? Because simple put, they didn’t like Russia, it was apart of the Soviet Union, the so called evil empire. That was kind of a stupid reason to stereotype Russian women.
Than there is the opposite side of the same negative attitudes brought on again by the media, in this country at least. Several months ago I read in our press, what they claim is the truth about Russian female singers and singing groups. It read that these singers don’t really have talent; they just flaunt their sexy bodies to get noticed. Wow, what a turn around in attitudes, unfortunately still negative. They have gone from beastly to being too sexy. Since when did anyone have a problem with that?
I will admit some tend to show what they got. You know the saying in this country that I have heard many times with our women, if you got it, why hide it? But at the same time, I would hardly say they are talent less, not by a long shot. Russian Pop, Rock, R&B, Hip-Hop, Rap singers both male and female can rival any others in the world.
Why our media and society is so hung up on Russian women, still after all these years, I can only guess? I know this negative feeling holds up with Russia itself. I suppose if you don’t like a country the best thing is to stereotype its people. And we have done one hell of a job of that with Russia.
At least part of the country I am from, at best the people around here are indifferent to Russia and Russians, and at the other extreme they consider Russia an apocalyptic evil. Why? I really could never figure out, especially when you learn about Russia and the Russians. But that is the key; they don’t care to learn, because at that point the stereotypes would be busted for sure.
If people still can’t see the error of these stereotypes, then they live completely in their own little world. They can't rise above the hatreds of the past, or is it they are not intelligent enough to see past the propaganda they were taught, and maybe still taught. Wake up, Russia is not the USSR. Do some research and you can easily find that to be the truth.
As an American, Russia has held an intense fascination to me since my late childhood and to this very day.
I believe Russia is better off than it was as part of the Soviet Union, even though the USSR may have helped Russia develop to some extent, it also hurt the country in other ways.
